A first time candidate in the Kiribati election says people need higher wages to keep up with the cost of living.

Kiribati goes to the polls on Friday for the first round of the country's election.

Only about half the eligible voters have registered to elect the country's 44 Mps.

Tiarite Kwong says the cost of goods is constantly going up.

"About the standard of living, most of them need a good standard of living, wages should be raised, and if the cost of goods can be reduced, that's one of the main concerns."

Tiarite Kwong says people also need better basic services.
