An extensive search and rescue operation for a missing swimmer in North Canterbury's Waimakariri River has been suspended for the night.

A police spokesperson says emergency services were called at 7.10pm, when a person who jumped into the river did not resurface.

"An extensive search and rescue operation has been underway since then, involving Police, the rescue helicopter, Coast Guard and Surf Lifesaving," the spokesperson said.

"Sadly the person has not yet been located."

The search is expected to resume tomorrow morning.

It is the second water-related incident in Canterbury today, after the death of a child who was found unresponsive in a Christchurch public swimming pool.

Emergency services were notified at 2.45pm today that the child was found at Waltham Swimming Pool, a police spokesperson said.

They said CPR was carried out, however, the child was unable to be revived.

Enquiries into the circumstances are underway.
