The North Korean government has apparently declared that every man in the country must have the same haircut as its leader, Kim Jong-un.

There had been 10 state-approved hairstyles for men, but that has been reduced to just one: a short back and sides, with floppy locks on top.

South Korean newspaper The Korea Times says Kim Jong-un issued this fashion mandate two weeks ago to the men in the capital Pyongyang and plans now to roll it out across the rest of the country.

What's called the Dear Leader Kim Jong-un Haircut is pretty distinctive: luxuriously thick and floppy on top with starkly shaved sides.

State approved hairstyles are nothing new in North Korea. For some time, men have had a choice of the 10 approved cuts, while women can pick from 18, the BBC reports.

In 2005, the state launched a campaign against long hair called 'Let's trim our hair in accordance with the Socialist lifestyle'.
