The chair of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Suzanne Case, said she was grateful to everyone involved for removing the vessel from the reef with the least amount of impact to the marine environment.

The ship was towed out to an approved disposal site in federal waters south of Oahu and sunk in 500 meters of water on Thursday.

The Coast Guard said there was minimal pollution during the operation to refloat and remove the grounded vessel.
