Claims Nauru protests intensifying

Protests against Australia's asylum seeker detention programme have reportedly intensified on Nauru, with hunger strikes and daily protests spreading from the family camp to the single men's camp.

The Refugee Action Coalition says more than 300 asylum seekers are now gathering to protest inside the camps daily, with those who have been resettled on Nauru protesting elsewhere on the island.

The coalition's spokesperson, Ian Rintoul, says the protests are in reaction to Canberra's temporary protection visa legislation.

"They were arbitarily selected and sent to Nauru and now the government is actually saying, 'in spite of the fact that you've been there for over a year, that there's now been 200 people who have been found to be refugees on Nauru, we're going to have nothing more to do with you but the people that we didn't send, we'll actually process and potentially resettle in Australia."

Ian Rintoul says the refugees on Nauru feel they're at the end of the line with nowhere else to go and the protests show no sign of slowing down.
