Police consider extraditing burned woman's husband

19:58 pm on 26 January 2011

New Zealand police in Fiji investigating the death of a woman burned alive on the side of a road are considering whether to extradite the husband.

The body of Ranjeeta Sharma, 28, from South Auckland was found burning on a rural roadside near Huntly in Waikato last Thursday.

Her husband flew to Fiji with their four-year-old son the following day.

Waikato detectives are hoping to interview Ms Sharma's husband, who has been in custody since late on Monday night.

Police have been seeking legal advice from the Crown solicitor and are considering options to bring the man back to New Zealand, including extradition.

They say no decision will be made until they have spoken to Ms Sharma's husband.

Police have refused to give any details about the couple's son, except to say they are working to make sure he is cared for.
