An infant has been taken to hospital in a critical condition following a water incident at the Napier Aquatic Centre in Hawke's Bay.

Emergency services were called to the pool just before midday.

A police spokesperson confirmed the patient was a baby and said the complex has been closed while police investigate.

The aquatic centre will remain closed for the rest of the weekend.

A spokesperson for the Napier City Council said the council was unable to provide any further details but said its thoughts were with the child and the family involved.

The spokesperson said the aquatic centre's staff who responded to the incident will receive support.
