New Zealand is to join the international body set up last year to educate nations about renewable energy.

So far, 142 countries have so far signed up with the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Energy and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee says New Zealand is now dealing with the paperwork to become a member.

Mr Brownlee says this country has extensive experience with renewable energy and has a role to play in accelerating its use globally.
