American Samoa cannaries competing for staff

14:06 pm on 15 March 2006

Cannery companies in American Samoa are trying new methods of recruiting staff given they are competing with each other.

Samoa Packing, based in American Samoa, is on a recruitment drive to try and employ 200 additional staff to clean fish.

Samoa Packing's general manager Herman Gebauer says it has to produce more canned tuna to meet demand from the US mainland.

But he says it won't be easy given Star Kist is recruiting as well.

"My neighbour, the biggest tuna plant, is also recruiting. So we're both trying to compete for people that are out there. Today we went to a local shopping centre and a community college. Yesterday we netted about 33 on this recruitment drive."

Mr Gebauer says the extra staff will bring Samoa Packing's work force to 2000.
