Solomon Islands signs an MOU with IOM

08:55 am on 13 February 2009

The Solomon Islands Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the International Organisation for Migration, or IOM, to enhance cooperation between the two parties on migration issues.

The arrangement will enable IOM to establish an office in Solomon Islands.

The IOM will offer expert advice, research, technical cooperation and operational assistance to the Government and its agencies and NGOs to build national capacity and facilitate co-operation on migration matters.

The permanent secretary of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Barnabas Anga, says the Solomons should be proactive in preparing for the challenges posed by climate change and economic development.

The IOM's Mark Getchell says one of its strategic priorities is to encourage increased dialogue between migration stakeholders at bilateral, regional and global levels.
