The Queenstown Lakes District Council reported yesterday that tests had revealed elevated levels of the bacteria in the lake near Queenstown's town centre, and people were advised to avoid the water as a precaution.

Council chief engineer Ulrich Glasner said today that further testing had shown the area was again safe for swimming.

The council could not confirm the source of the contamination, but suggested weather played a part.
