Thousands of residents in low-lying areas on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota in the Northern Marianas were evacuated to higher ground after the acting governor Eloy S. Inos declared a tsunami warning for the territory.
Although the estimated arrival time of the tsunami was 7pm , the tsunami warning was not lifted until 10:50pm.
An Associated Press report stated that waves of about nearly a meter high hit the beach on Saipan but this could not be independently confirmed with the Emergency Management Office.
