Gisborne was hit with heavy rain this afternoon but a severe thunderstorm warning for the region has been lifted.
MetService said the storm would be near Gisborne and Whangara on Tuesday from about 2pm.
"These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and hail."
The forecaster warned the conditions could cause flash floods around streams, gullies and urban areas.
The National Emergency Management Agency warned that people should take shelter away from windows as the storm approaches, get back to land and secure loose objects.
Drivers were warned to be aware of fallen trees and powerlines.
Separate thunderstorm watches remained in place for Northland, Bay of Plenty and Hawke's Bay.
