Fiji concerned over overcrowded jails

19:09 pm on 3 October 2016

The head of Fiji's Corrections Service says overcrowding in prisons remains a concern.

Commander Francis Kean said the country's prisons had the capacity for 1,000 inmates, but there were currently 1,423 people detained.

He told FBC News that the Service was talking with the Ministry of Justice and the police to try and solve the issue.

Some possible solutions include the wider use of suspended sentences or stricter bail conditions.

Mr Kean, who himself served one week in prison for manslaughter, said a new remand centre should help ease the pressure.
