A rural fire officer estimates the recent fires in Canterbury will cost millions of dollars.

At least 150 hectares of grassland was burnt near Prebbleton, south of the Christchurch, on Thursday and another 137 hectares of bush and scrub destroyed near the Waimakariri river on Friday.

Firefighters flew over the scorched areas on Monday and identified 39 potential flare-ups on a thermal imaging map.

By Tuesday the last of the crews had left the Waimakariri site and one team remained at the Prebbleton site.

Selwyn District principal rural fire officer Wilson Brown said the fires had cost the district more than $500,000 while private losses are likely to run into the millions.
