Hamilton council does U-turn over V8 fines

19:00 pm on 10 July 2009

Hamilton mayor Bob Simcock says he has asked his staff to withdraw fines handed to residents who watched the V8 Supercar race from their rooftops.

The Hamilton City Council sent out 11 fines worth $1500 each. Eight of them involved people climbing onto roofs.

The council said some roofs might not have been able to take the weight.

Mr Simcock says the council took legal advice on Friday about whether it could be held responsible for any death or injury if someone fell from a roof.

He says it appears staff have done enough once they have issued a safety warning and a fine is not necessary.
