US tags CNMI as forced labor, sex trafficking site

10:23 am on 25 June 2014

The US State Department's newly released 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report has tagged the CNMI once again as a destination and transit location for men, women, and children subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking.

The CNMI and Guam's classifications, along with other US territories', have not changed from the 2013 Trafficking in Persons Report.

The report says Guam is a source and transit location for people subjected to forced labor and sex trafficking.

It says in February 2014, the US District Court for the CNMI accepted the guilty plea of a woman for child sex trafficking.

In a separate case, the court sentenced a defendant for the sex trafficking of a Chinese woman at a karaoke club to 235 months in prison and ordered almost $US10,000 in restitution to the victim.

The State Department's Trafficking in Persons Report is an important instrument to assess the current state of anti-trafficking responses in each country.
