Overspend approved for American Samoa's Fono and Governor's Office

10:25 am on 22 September 2008

The Senate in American Samoa has approved in second reading a supplemental bill that would appropriate nearly a million US dollars to cover overspending in the Fono and Governor's Office for fiscal year 2008.

The Chairman of the Government Operations Committee, Senator Fiatauiaulava Sauni, moved to pass the measure warning his colleagues that if they didn't pass the bill there would be no cheques next week.

Senators voted unanimously on the bill, which was only introduced the day before.

The Senate did not call any hearings, so no information has been revealed about the cause of the overspending.
