A leading anti-independence New Caledonian politician Pierre Frogier says the idea of dual citizenship has been evoked for New Caledonia should it win independence from France.

Mr Frogier said the concept was raised by President Emmanuel Macron when he spoke to New Caledonian leaders in Paris ahead of this week's formal talks of the signatories to the Noumea Accord.

He has told French radio that voters could decide that New Caledonia become a new country.

He said in that case Mr Macron advised that he might approach the French parliament to possibly give French people still living in New Caledonia dual citizenship.
