Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed his team planned to sell Raheem Sterling to a rival Premier League football club, though he's played down reports of an acrimonious rift over the restless England forward.

British media are saying 20-year-old Sterling is joining Manchester City in a deal worth more than $100 million, a record for a transfer within the English Premier League.

Brendan Rogers says the transfer is complete, subject to a medical, and while the manager says he's maintained a strong relationship with the player, Sterling was jeered by club supporters at an end-of-season awards dinner.

But Rodgers' relationship with Sterling cooled considerably when the player in January turned down a lucrative new contract worth more than $200,000 per week.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's transfer flurry has continued with the signings of Germany's captain Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich and the French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton.

Schneiderlin signed a four-year contract for a fee reported to be more than $50 million, while midfielder Schweinsteiger joined United on a three-year deal for a fee of around $32 million.
