Solomons quarantine department confident in containing giant snails

The Solomon Islands Quarantine Department says it's confident it can contain the spread of the Giant African Snail, which is threatening the country's agriculture and forest products.

The department's first sighting of the snail was at logging premises in Ranadi Industrial area last year but it is now reporting an outbreak in other parts of Honiara.

The Chief Quarantine Officer, Daniel Wagatora, says the department is doing its best to eradicate the problem, which is only affecting Honiara.

"By creating a greater awareness programme, we hope to seek public support to actually enable us to actually help control the snails. The government alone cannot do it. That's what we've been telling them and the public support will enable us to actually contain or control the snails from Solomon Islands."

Daniel Wagatora says the government has now injected some funds to allow the quarantine department to replace its snail bait which ran out seven months ago.
