After a three-year governance review, Waikato-Tainui has renamed its representative body.
The new name will be "Te Whakakitenga o Waikato Incorporated", which replaces Waikato-Tainui Te Kauhanganui Incorporated.
The new name, which was announced by Kīngi Tuheitia, means the 'foresight of Waikato'.
As Kīngi Tuheitia delivered the new name he recalled the words of the tribe's tūpuna, Kīngi Tāwhiao, who once said:
"Mehemea kare kau ana he whakakitenga, ka mate te iwi."
"Where there is no vision, the people will perish"
The old title will be returned to Ngāti Hāua, the iwi who gifted the previous name later this year.
At the announcement Kīngi Tuheitia delivered messages of loyalty, unity and hope for the future.
"Today, you must usher in a new way, a better way, a more effective and efficient way of doing our business and discharging our duties to our people and to the generations to come," Kīngi Tuheitia said.
