A heavy rain forecast for Tairawhiti Gisborne has now been upgraded to an orange warning, while warnings and watches in other parts of the country remain.

MetService said on Sunday night it expected the region could get 70 to 100 mm of rain from then until 6pm on Monday.

The expected amounts could mean driving conditions become hazardous with surface flooding and slips possible, and streams and rivers could rise rapidly.

An Orange Heavy Rain Warning was already in place for Hawke's Bay, south of Te Pōhue.

Heavy Rain Watches remained in place for Bay of Plenty, Marlborough and Wairarapa.

Waka Kotahi said it wanted drivers to be prepared for road hazards, with the weather likely to affect State Highway 2, 3 and State Highway 53.
