A$AP Ferg: After playing in New Zealand only last year, A$AP Ferg is back in the country for two shows, which included last night’s gig in Wellington and another scheduled for tonight at The Studio in Auckland. It’s safe to say it’ll be one not to be missed. Plus, given that Ferg is currently working on the follow-up to 2013’s Trap Lord, maybe we’ll hear a preview?
First Thursdays: First Thursdays, which takes place every three months, is back this evening on K Road and this time it’s sci-fi themed. Expect “monster experiments, Science Friction street performances, Cyborg style cooking served by Robo Dolls, extra-terrest-aerial displays and a chance to party in a space station”. Noel Fielding: After having his New Zealand shows slightly postponed, Noel Fielding, the star of British comedy show The Mighty Boosh, is here this week to play four shows around the country. Tickets for both Auckland gigs are available through Ticketmaster, while Ticketek is the spot for those in Wellington and Christchurch and we’ve been told to “expect a magical mix of Noel’s unique brand of stand-up comedy, live animation, music and some of Fielding’s best-known TV characters including The Moon and Fantasy Man”.
Montage of Heck: Opening in New Zealand cinemas today, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is the first documentary on the Nirvana frontman to have been authorised by his family. The film was directed by Brett Morgen, who was behind 2002’s The Kid Stays In The Picture which looked at Hollywood producer Robert Evans, and this time around he was given access to the Cobain family archives, including film and audio gems that were largely unseen before. A Doll’s House: Local novelist Emily Perkins has written her first play, reworking Henrik Ibesen’s 19th century play A Doll’s House into a contemporary New Zealand setting. It’s on now at Maidment Theatre and runs until May 23, and you can find out more about the idea, including why Perkins and director Colin McColl felt the need to rewrite a classic, over at RNZ.
LIPS: Back in the country and playing a series of small gigs, Silver Scroll winner and Brooklyn-based LIPS aka Stephanie Brown, hits up Auckland this Friday for a show at Golden Dawn. She’ll be joined by Leonard Charles, Jeremy Toy of She’s So Rad’s newish synthy project. The show kicks off at 8pm, with DJs Official Funning and Dinger Bell also playing on the night.
Nepal Danceathon: This Friday sees The Psychs, Randa, The Basement Tapes, Kieran Tahir and Career Girls perform as part of the Nepal Danceathon, an event that’s raising money on behalf of the Himalayan Trust that will go towards the rebuilding of communities post-quake. Entry is $10 on the door and it’s taking place at Absolutely Trashed, which is on Mercury Lane just off K Rd. More info here.
