New Caledonian minister likens Goro attacks to terrorism

16:57 pm on 5 April 2006

The New Caledonian minister for mining and economic development, Didier Leroux, says Kanak activists involved in the weekend violence are behaving like terrorists.

Goro Nickel stopped all operations indefinitely after Kanak activists caused millions of US dollars in damages in attacks on vehicles and installations on the Goro Nickel site.

Goro Nickel is the biggest industrial project in the South Pacific, with a planned investment of about two billion US dollars.

Mr Leroux says the behaviour of the Kanak activists is unacceptable.

"There should be some ultimate talks but there will also be some strong legal action undertaken, because you cannot expect that a minority of people behaving like terrorist do whatever they did, without being obliged to face their responsibilities ."

Didier Leroux.

200 employees of the company have marched through the capital today to demand job security.
