The woman convicted with her partner of the manslaughter of three-year-old Moko Rangitoheriri is to appeal against her sentence.
Tania Shailer, 26 and David Haerewa, 44, were both sentenced to 17 years in jail in the High Court in Rotorua last month with a minimum non-parole period of nine years.
The couple bashed and kicked Moko to death when he was in their care in Taupo last year.
Shailer lodged her appeal with the Court of Appeal on Tuesday.
Sensible Sentencing Trust spokesman Garth McVicar said he thought the public would be disgusted and shocked at the appeal, which he said had been predictable.
The judge stepped out of her comfort zone when giving Shailer one of the longest sentences ever in this country for manslaughter, he said - and that might be one of the grounds for appeal.
