For the first time ever on Australia Day, the Aboriginal flag is flying alongside the national flag on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The ABC reports the dual flag-raising ceremony was held at the bridge Saturday morning.

The New South Wales governor Marie Bashir said it was a significant moment.

She said it denoted the reality of how the lives were changed of the people of the longest living civilisation on Earth with the arrival, at that spot, of the First Fleet.
