A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing electric pianos and keyboards from Auckland University.

Senior Sergeant Dave Plunkett said the 32-year-old first broke in around 10.30pm on Monday night, loading the pianos and keyboards into a vehicle.

He then allegedly returned about 1am on Tuesday, but was spotted by a security guard.

"The offender dropped a keyboard he was carrying and fled."

Police were notified and found a vehicle of interest parked outside a hostel in Eden Terrace soon after.

"Police staff entered the hostel, located the alleged suspect, and arrested him without incident.

"He was in possession of a large amount of cash and three musical keyboards, valued at around $350 each."

The man was scheduled to appear in Auckland District Court on Tuesday, charged with 10 counts of burglary, as well as possessing methamphetamine for supply and shoplifting.
