French Polynesian telecommunications and postal workers set to strike from midnight

20:30 pm on 9 May 2006

A strike by French Polynesia's telecommunications and postal workers is set to go ahead at midnight local time.

This comes after talks failed to accommodate union demands to give 60 employees better contracts.

The strike is set to close post offices tomorrow and affect other services run by the enterprise, OPT.

These include technical support for a satellite television channel, the monopoly internet provider and the local mobile phone service.

More talks between the OPT head and union leaders are scheduled for tomorrow.
