In the electoral referendum, advance votes indicate there is support for keeping the Mixed Member Proportional system.

The results of the referendum on MMP will not be finalised for two weeks, but almost 290,233 votes cast before election day have been counted.

Of those voters, 53.74% voted to keep MMP, while 42.62% voted for change.

Out of the four alternative voting systems put forward, First Past the Post was the most popular, with 31.89% support.

Next was Supplementary Member with 14.53% support, Single Transferable Vote on 11.24% and Preferential Voting on 8.19% support.

There was also a high number of voters who did not answer the second question on alternative systems and invalid votes reached 34%.
