Murray-Darling Basin draft plan to be issued

13:52 pm on 27 November 2011

Details of a draft plan for the Murray-Darling Basin will be posted on the Basin Authority's website at midnight on Sunday.

Water Minister Tony Burke said on 8 November that the draft plan would return 2,8000 gigalitres to the system.

However, he warned, it will not please everyone.

The ABC reports a formal 20-week consultation period will start after the plan is released.

Public meetings will be held in regional and metropolitan areas to obtain feedback from communities along the river system.

An earlier Murray-Darling Basin plan was issued in October last year.

The ABC reports it drastically cut the amount of water which could be taken from the river system.

The Murray-Darling Basin covers 1.05 million square km and contains over 40% of all Australian farms. It serves New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
