Media reports said he was ambushed at his home.

The Defence Force said his death was a matter that did not affect its mission.

There are 143 New Zealand military personnel based at Camp Taji where they are training Iraqi soldiers.

A Defence spokesperson said they constantly monitored the security situation in Iraq and had security measures in place at the Taji Military Complex.
