Bill aims to modernise court system

16:54 pm on 27 November 2013

A bill aiming to bring New Zealand's court system into the 21st century has been introduced to Parliament.

The Judicature Modernisation Bill will require courts to publish their decisions online, unless there is a good reason not to.

It will also ensure that the judiciary publishes the number of judgments outstanding beyond a reasonable time.

Justice Minister Judith Collins said on Wednesday that New Zealanders are paying for justice and should be able to access information about it.

Ms Collins says the bill paves the way for electronic ways of working, which people expect nowadays.
