A triple murderer and rapist has been granted parole and will be monitored by GPS for five years.
Hayden Poulter, 56, is serving three life sentences for the murder of two prostitutes and a massage parlour owner in 1996, plus an attempted murder and a rape.
Poulter was described by media in 1996 as "New Zealand's first serial killer".
The Parole Board said he has completed various programmes inside prison, including treatment for drug addiction and one for adult sex offenders.
Poulter has been in a self-care unit for the past four years and has had 20 guided releases into the community.
He is regarded as being at a moderate risk of re-offending.
His parole conditions include being banned from entering Auckland.
Poulter has also been barred from drinking alcohol or using drugs for the rest of his life, as they were influences on his offending.
Poulter's conditions:
- To attend psychological treatment
- To attend alcohol and drug assessments and complete any treatment
- To abstain from the consumption and/or possession of alcohol, synthetic cannabinoids and non-prescription drugs for life
- To reside at an address [withheld]
- To be at home between 10pm and 6am, seven days a week
- Notify probation if there is a change in employment
- To disclose any intimate relationship
- Not to enter Auckland
- Not to associate with the victims
- Not to use sex workers
- Not to place or respond to advertisements
- Not to communicate with the media
- Comply with electronic monitoring and allow access to his residence
- To submit to electronic monitoring requirements
- To attend a hearing in November to enable the Parole Board to monitor your compliance with your release conditions
