Man of the moment

06:10 am on 22 February 2014

Brendon McCullum made the history books on Tuesday by becoming the first Kiwi cricketer to score a triple century in a single test innings.

It was a day to remember for the New Zealand Black Caps captain but also for thrilled cricket fans that rose to their feet in ovation at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, ecstatically cheering for the man of the moment.

"I've never experienced anything like that before, that's something I'll hold on to for the rest of my life,”  One News reported McCullum saying.

When asked if he got a bit emotional McCullum replied, "Nah, no tear in the eye. I'm from south Dunedin."

One man that would have had a tear in his eye is Cricket legend Martin Crowe. Now the second highest scoring batsman in test cricket for New Zealand sitting just shy of the triple century at 299 runs.

“I never forgave myself for getting out for 299 against Sri Lanka. Not a week would go by when I wouldn't be reminded of the one run I craved so much. It tore at me like a vulture pecking dead flesh,” Crowe wrote in a personal account for ESPN.

Crowe told of his own struggles but said he felt great relief when McCullum claimed the triple ton.

"Brendon deserves it. He's endured enough pain over the course of his career. However, during the last few innings he has completely removed any emotion from his batting. It has enabled him to turn in these great performances,” Crowe told the NZ Herald.

With the history making performance of McCullum leading his team to a rare test series victory over India and while climbing to a career high of 12th in the International batsmen rankings, it truly does look like the Black Caps are now well equiped to move in the right direction.
