A retail analyst says Christmas shoppers are increasingly turning to the internet to buy gifts, with more than $400 million spent online from early November to mid-December.
Marketview managing director Stephen Bridle says New Zealanders spent $162 million on international websites during the six week period, up 14% from last year.
He says $243 million was spent on local websites, an increase of 5% percent.
Mr Bridle says people use online shopping to find a bargain with electronic equipment topping spending, followed by clothing, books and sportsgear.
