Soak: 18-year-old Northern Irish musician Bridie Monds-Watson aka Soak, is in the country for one very small show at Golden Dawn this Saturday. Tipped as one to watch for her early releases and recent performance at SXSW, she has a full-length album on the way, titled Before We Forgot How to Dream. Support for the show comes from Instant Fantasy and tickets are only available on the door so get in early.
Record Store Day: Taking place this Saturday, Record Store Day feels bigger than ever, especially with the recent news that Britain have begun a separate vinyl chart due to the surge in interest. This year sees events across the country to celebrate some of the special vinyl releases and as dubdotdash points out, Marbecks will be hosting live performances from Lawrence Arabia and Tiny Ruins, while Southbound Records and Real Groovy also have events lined up. Further south, Wellington’s Rough Peel Music and Slow Boat Records will also have live sets from local musicians, including Tami Neilson, while stores in New Plymouth and Dunedin also have stuff planned for the day.
Flying Out Record Store: Speaking of Record Store Day, online music store Flying Out, which is comprised of music from local labels Flying Nun and Arch Hill Recordings, have announced that they are opening a new record store in Auckland on Saturday. Located at the ex-Shaver Shop at 80 Pitt Street, the store will stock a range of vinyl and Flying Out co-director Matthew Davis says that it will cater to creating a community of music fans, adding “who doesn't like hanging at a record store?”
Last Exit To Muzai: Independent local music label, Muzai, have just released a new documentary, directed by The Bemsha Swing’s Shane Warbrooke. It’s titled Last Exit To Muzai, and features footage of The All Seeing Hand, Sunken Seas, Wilberforces and more, with footage filmed during Muzai’s huge fifth anniversary show in Auckland last year. NZIFF Autumn Events: Kicking off today, NZIFF’s Autumn Events season sees two documentaries and five restored classic films on screens across Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Christchurch. Amongst them is The Ground We Won, an account of a season in the lives of a provincial rugby team, which was directed by Christopher Pryor and Miriam Smith, the husband/wife duo behind How Far Is Heaven. Also playing is That Sugar Film, as well as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Spartacus, The Conformist, Pinocchio, and A Hard Day’s Night. Find out everything you need to know here.
Gorillaz Sound System: Remi Kabaka, percussionist for Gorillaz and Bobby Womack, is now touring as Gorillaz Sound System, the audio/visual experience that sees him DJing Gorillaz’ music backed with their huge visuals. He’s in the country for four shows, including those in Dunedin, Auckland and Christchurch over the next three days. Find what’s left of the tickets over at Dash.
Mobb Deep: Queenbridge, New York duo Mobb Deep are in the country this week for three shows to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their classic 1995 album The Infamous. The tour kicks off tonight at The Foundry in Christchurch, with shows in Wellington and Auckland over the next couple of days. They’ll be joined by DJ Ski Beatz, probably best known for his work on Jay Z’s Reasonable Doubt, and you can find tickets for all shows over at Dash.
