Fiji's National Security Council meets today to discuss allegations against the military commander

07:36 am on 17 May 2004

Fiji's National Security Council will meet today to discuss allegations that the military commander had asked his officers to draw up plans to overthrow the government.

It's alleged such plans were drawn up in case Commodore Frank Bainimarama's term as commander was not renewed.

The prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, will chair today's meeting which will also be attended by the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes.

It is not clear whether Commodore Bainimarama, who returned from the United States at the weekend, will be at the meeting.

Meanwhile, one of the three officers who made the allegations in a signed statement, Colonel Alfred Tuatoko, has distanced himself from it.

Colonel Tuatoko says the statement was an annex to a redress of wrong petition he had sent to Commodore Bainimarama and the home affairs ministry and he does not know how it was released to the media.
