Fiji's media council questions need for new legislation

Fiji's Media council is questioning the need for the government to introduce new media legislation.

Chairman, Daryl Tarte, says he hopes that the industry will have some input into the the proposed law which has gone before cabinet.

Mr Tarte says there are doubts about whether it's needed because the industry already has an independent media council and a code of ethics.

"We have a very progressive code of ethics and practice and it provides a regulatory mechanism for all media organisations. And if there is any breach of those codes, if there is any complaint from the public, then there is a mechanism for dealing with those complaints."

Mr Tarte says the outgoing minister of information, Josefa Vosanibola, has assured him that the media will be able to see the legislation before it is presented in parliament.
