A group of 115 residents stranded in New Caledonia because of the Covid-19 outbreak in March were flown to Wallis last month.

They were accommodated in two hotels and on a French cruise ship which had earlier brought about 100 residents back to Wallis from Noumea.

Originally it was planned to use the ship for two return trips but instead the second group was flown in.

Wallis and Futuna remained the only French-run territory without registering a single Covid-19 case.

Travellers from New Caledonia are now exempt from any quarantine requirements.

Hopes are high for half a dozen Wallisians stranded in Fiji that a Twin-Otter plane can be organised for them to return.
