Toronto protests flare again

08:41 am on 28 June 2010

Police in Toronto have fired tear gas on protesters for a second consecutive day as new violence erupted outside the G20 summit venue and the arrest tally climbed above 500.

Canada is hosting the G20 meeting, which was preceded by a meeting of G8 leaders.

The latest clashes occurred as several hundred protesters marched on a temporary detention centre for demonstrators arrested on Saturday when windows of stores and banks were smashed and police cars were set alight.

The Canadian government has condemned those who chose violence instead of peaceful protests.

Toronto police chief Bill Blair says the damage was unnecessary.
