Fiji plans to set up tourist police

10:45 am on 4 June 2003

Fiji is planning to set up a special police unit to protect tourists.

It follows many reports of tourists being robbed, raped and otherwise attacked.

Tourism is Fiji's biggest industry and the minister responsible, Pita Nacuva, says it will be under threat if law and order is not given the right attention.

Mr Nacuva says levels of damage that can be claimed by tourists can be quite high and unless criminal attacks are addressed, Fiji will pay the price for its inattention.
