A rebel group in Indonesia-ruled West Papua is protesting calls for one of its members to face the death penalty.
Indonesian prosecutors on Friday demanded the sentence for Yogor Telenggen, a West Papua Liberation Army fighter charged with premeditated murder.
Telenggen is serving a life sentence, but escaped in January 2016, only to be recaptured in May last year, according to the Liberation Army.
He faces fresh charges over a shooting in Feburary last year in the Papua central highlands regency of Puncak.
A Liberation Army spokesperson Sebby Sambom said the charges were unfair because Telenggen was fighting in a war against the Indonesian state.
Mr Sambom said if Telenggen gets the death sentence, the Liberation Army will retaliate.
