One dead, one critically injured after crash on Auckland's Upper Harbour Highway

One person has died and another is critically injured following a crash between a car and van on Upper Harbour Highway in Auckland.

Emergency services were called just after 10am on Monday to a section near the Tauhinu Road off ramp in Greenhithe.

A police employee was also seriously injured in the incident.

The employee was on duty in a speed camera van when the crash happened. They were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

In a statement this afternoon police said the man was undergoing surgery.

"This incident is also incredibly distressing for our wider police family, who go to work every day to keep New Zealanders safe in their communities and on the roads," it said.

Police were still establishing the exact circumstances of the crash but said initial reports suggested the speed camera van was parked on the side of the road in an appropriate location when it was struck by the other vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle has died at the scene

Police remain at the scene and the Serious Crash Unit and Waitematā CIB are investigating the cause of the crash.

Part of the road was closed.
