However, overall food prices fell a seasonally adjusted 0.6 percent compared with December, reflecting a drop in the prices of fruit and vegetables and grocery prices.

Stats NZ says the average price of a head of broccoli bounced back to about $2.80, after a bumper December harvest had driven prices down to seven-year lows.

A head of lettuce also rose to nearly $1.90 - 50 cents more than last year's prices.

But avocados are cheaper, well down from last year's highs.

And while the price of milk is at a 19-year low, consumers paid more for yoghurt, cheese and butter.
