The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board says an increasing elderly population will drive the type of health services needed in the near future.
A series of public meetings is to start this week and the feedback will help the board plan for the healthcare needs of a population where the fastest growth will be among those aged over 75.
The board's chief executive Chris Fleming said it was facing some significant challenges, including a large-scale redevelopment of Nelson Hospital.
Mr Fleming said the business case would begin next year for the expected $120 million hospital redevelopment.
