A 43-year-old man has appeared in court this afternoon charged with the murder of a Christchurch woman.

Police were called to reports of an assault on Hawke Street in the suburb of New Brighton at 10.40pm last night.
The woman, in her 40s, was found unresponsive by emergency services and died on the way to hospital.
Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells confirmed that the man they arrested has appeared in the Christchurch District Court.
He said police are continuing with a scene examination which is near a supermarket.

Police will remain at the scene overnight.
Wells said the formal identification of the dead woman has not yet been completed so her name is not being released yet.
Police have requested that the privacy of the woman's family be respected at such a distressing time.
