Police are investigating after a man was found with what appears to be a gunshot injury in Nelson last night.

Police were called about 11.20pm to St Vincent Street, where the injured man was found.

He was taken to hospital, where he now remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police said they were trying to establish how the man was wounded.

A scene examination is underway at a nearby address and a scene guard is in place.

Police said they did not believe there was a risk to the wider public because initial inquiries suggested the incident involved parties linked to each other.

They would like to hear from anyone who was in the St Vincent Street area from about 11.15pm and who may have information about what happened.

Information can be provided to police on 105, quoting event number P053133341, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
