Big dogs will be allowed on buses from Monday in an eight-week trial by Auckland Transport.
Small breeds have been allowed on public transport permanently since December and now buses will be taking larger pets.
Dogs that do not fit in approved carriers can start travelling on Auckland buses from Monday and if the trial is successful the change will be permanent.
The animals will have to be using an approved muzzle and be always on a leash.
AT's improvement delivery lead Luke Clarke said the enthusiastic response to pets on buses showed people wanted more options when travelling.
"This trial reflects our commitment to make public transport easier and more accessible. We're excited to see larger four-legged passengers joining their owners on our buses," Clarke said.
Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Ward Councillor Josephine Bartley said she was pleased Auckland was becoming a more pet friendly city.
"Changes like this make catching public transport an option for more people. I'm definitely looking forward to taking my dog Milo on the bus soon," she said.
The rules
- Apart from wearing an approved muzzle and being always on a leash, larger breeds should not be occupying a seat or be taken to the upper deck
- Dogs will not be allowed on any bus during peak traffic times. On weekdays, dogs are allowed on buses from 9am until 3pm and after 6.30pm
- On weekends and public holidays they can ride at any time
- Commuters will not pay extra to take a dog on the bus, but if the bus is too crowded owners may have to wait until another bus arrives
- Every owner is responsible for cleaning up their dog's mess
- Owners might be asked to leave the bus if their pet poses a risk to other people, and, if this happens, there will be no refund
- Children younger than 16 years old are not allowed to travel with pets unless they are with an adult.
The trial will run until 16 July.
