Manawatu Prison director Mark Cookson confirmed the death, which is not being treated as suspicious.

He said police had attended the prison and will notify the deceased man's family.

Prisoners and staff affected by the man's death would be provided with support, Cookson said.

The death has been referred to the Coroner, who is yet to determine the cause.

For all deaths in custody, there is also an investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate.
